Renaissance lutes
With the name of Renaissance lute combines a whole range of instruments, from the very small octave lute to the big bass lutes. The number of course varies and has a range from six to ten courses.
Many lutemakers of the 16th - and 17th Century have made this lute type and in the museums, there are still some instruments, but few in their original state. Renaissance lutes were very early objects of ongoing modifications. So there are many Baroque lutes, which have been converted from old Renaissance lutes. From these can be but with the knowledge of construction, design language and the tone models corresponding renaissance "reverse engineer".
Instruments from this period are from lutemakers like Laux Maler and Hans Frei, George Gerle, Michael Harton or the Tieffenbrucker family. Wendelino Venere, a member of this family made for my taste especially good lutes with that warm sound of the later instruments. That’s why you will find some instruments from him in my examples.
