Continuo instruments - Archlutes - Theorbos - Chitarrone - Liuto attiorbato

On these pages I have collated some instruments they are particularly suited for accompaniment, as a second part or basso continuo. These are all instruments which constitute by their construction, a greater projection of the sound in the room. In this instruments is the ratio of belly area to body depth greater. The sound projected into the room is greater then “normal” lutes. Under the name continuo I've summarized all the lutes which have a pronounced neck extension (these lutes have additional a bass extension with different length to the freeted strings). I show in this section, the Archlute, the Liuto attiorbato, and the theorbo or chitarrone.

These instruments can be adapted to the wishes of the players. This concerns especially the definition of the string lengths and the choice of strings. With the exceptions of Liuto attiorbato the string lengths are usually quite large. Here the player should choose his best "personal" string length for playing comfort. Historically theorboes also had used different types of strings. These lutes can be built in both single strings or choirs with double strings. Very nice instruments come from Matteo Sellas, Magno Dieffopruchar, Wendelino Venere, Sebastian Schelle, Matthew Buechenberg or Giovanni Tesler, to name a few.
